The Big Earthquake of 08
So there was an earthquake last night, around 1am. A whopping 5.3. Of course it’s nothing compared to other countries, but this is the UK. Things like that aren’t supposed to happen here. So it’s a big deal. All over the news. It woke me up – the bed was shaking backwards and forwards, and stuff was rattling in my room. It only lasted about 10 seconds. This morning it added an air of excitement to the day. How sad is that? I got overly excited by something new and unexpected happening in an otherwise extremely dull and boring week.

Hey Girl,
Earthquakes make news even for those of us who have been through lots of them. We had one a week ago that barely rumbled the table. We still looked it up on the USGS site to see where it was centered and it's power.(It was located in Calexico, Mexico and 5.0 but we only felt a tiny jolt here in San Diego)
Having a quake in the UK is a bit scary in the sense that I don't think your buildings are built to withstand anything too "earthshaking". A 5.3, while not a monster quake, is big enough to rattle quite a few nerves. It's a respectible size for an earthquake. You will feel that one miles away. It must have been odd waking up and feeling the bed shake. What did you think was going on?
It's little jolts like that which wake you up and remind you the world is full of surprises.
Apparently the UK has something like 200 earthquakes a year, but they're so slight we never feel them.
I knew it was an earthquake, because we had one a few years ago. Both happened at night, which was odd.
